What are Trollbeads?

The idea of wearing beads and charms has been part of many cultures worldwide for thousands of years. Tapping into the unique human spirit and creativity, Trollbeads began in Denmark in 1976, and were the very first in this concept of charm beads. In 2005 this new and artistic jewellery started entering into the UK and Ireland. But, what exactly are they?

Who invented them? Created by Lise Aagaard, she and her family still own and run the company from Denmark to this day.

More than beads:Trollbeads is an exquisite set of interchangeable jewellery that lets people create their own look. At the heart of this collection are the beads themselves. Each Trollbeads charm bead has a special significance, mythical meaning or astrological story behind it. As you collect Trollbeads charm beads you can make your very own unique necklaces and bracelets by placing the beads into your own design on the special Trollbeads chains and leather jewellery.

What are they made from? Trollbeads are beautifully crafted from different materials. Some are made from pearl, silver, gold, amber and precious stones. The most popular material for Trollbeads is stunning glass from Italy – made using a technique called lamp-work. They make excellent gifts since they’re so unique and each Trollbead has a story to tell – you can give a really personal and significant gift that means something special. And, once a person has started they can build their own collection – to create jewellery to suit any mood or occasion.

Where can you get them? Up until 2005 Trollbeads were limited to those that were lucky enough to discover them in Copenhagen. Since then the magic has spread all over the world. They are now sold through specially selected distributors worldwide, and can be found from the UK to Japan. These distributors are part of the Trollbeads family, and are responsible for finding retailers in their countries that keep the spirit of Trollbeads intact, and make sure that every Trollbeads customer gets great service.

Customisation: Every Trollbead is designed by a highly skilled artist in Denmark, and supervised by Lise herself. And, because every bead is hand-finished, even if you buy the same design as someone else, yours will be totally unique. The beads can be mixed and matched in so many ways, so you really can tell YOUR story YOUR way. The designers are inspired by nature, mythology, colour, astrology and so much more – and there’s a bead for almost everything. From snails to serpents, to abstract designs, you can create a bracelet or necklace that reflects your personality.

The perfect gift: Building your own Trollbeads bracelet can be the perfect way to create someone a gift that reflects their personality and the story of your relationship. It could be your best friend, your mum, your dad, your sister, your brother, or any loved one. If there’s a part of their personality that really shines through, emphasise it through Trollbeads.

Marking milestones: Many Trollbeads fans use their bracelet to mark personal achievements, giving them a little boost every time they wear it. With beads to mark the birth of a baby or Graduation, for example, you can see how a bracelet builds a life story.

What’s the link to Trolls? In traditional Scandinavian folklore a troll is very different to the rest of the world. A troll is a cute little forest creature that steals and hides your things as well as tricking you. The original name of Trollbeads is Troldekuger which translates as troll beads or troll pearls.

When the company went international they wanted to maintain a link to their heritage. Trolls are not bad creatures, they are mystical. You can get mischievous trolls for your bracelets and necklaces, the Baby Troll being one of the most popular.

Your very own work of art: Trollbeads are exquisite. Unlike many mass-produced charm beads now on the market, each piece of Trollbeads jewellery has been designed by an internationally respected artist. Owning Trollbeads jewellery means owing a unique work of art.

You might hear people talking about, or selling, Troll Beads, Troll charms, Troll-style beads – the genuine articles are Trollbeads. Make sure you get the real thing.

Build your own stories and wear them your way.
