Murano glass necklace from Venice to Miami – in fashion forever
It’s summer! The best time of the year. Time for vacations, pool parties, lovely little dresses, tank tops, huge hats, drinks with umbrellas. Time for fun. We are starting tonight. My best friend is starting the party season by inviting everyone to her new garden by the pool. It is going to be the true fashion show. I can finally show off my beautiful Murano glass necklace. It will work perfectly with my Missoni colorful layered dress.
So there I am, dressed to kill, nursing a Cosmopolitan, dying for my friends to notice my necklace and start ohh-ing and ahhh-ing. But, to my horror, I noticed that all of them are wearing Murano glass bead necklaces! What is going on?
“Where did you get your necklace, it is beautiful” I asked my friend Nell.
“On the web. I see you have one too. They are all the rage this summer. Did you know that they are made in Italy?”
She had no clue. For her, it was just a necklace, lovely colorful glass beads.
“All the rage? These beads were in fashion for the last eight hundred years! They are from Murano. They were worn by queens and kings. They are unique, there are no two that are the same. Each is made by hand, by Venetian artists, who are using the same technique for centuries. ” I was incensed by my friend’s lack of appreciation of the real value of her necklace.
“Darling, where did you learn all that? It is cool. I did not know I was wearing something so special. I just thought this necklace went so well with my red top. Look at the little specks of gold floating in each bead.”
My other friend, Bess, was also wearing Murano necklace, this one emerald green. She had a little black strapless dress and the necklace was really showing in its full glory.
“Don’t you love it?” she said. “My boyfriend saw in the Elle magazine that glass jewelry is in fashion this summer and found this necklace for me. Isn’t he something?” she was gushing.
The lantern light was reflected off the water in the pool and in the colorful beads around my friends’ necks. The soft music was playing in the background, the fruit drinks were flowing, all was good with the world. I was trying to imagine countless similar, or not so similar, parties, though centuries, in Venice and in other European capitals. The dresses were different, ladies probably did not drink alcohol, the hair was definitively different, but the glass Murano necklaces were the same. Magnificent colorful beads around the necks of lovely ladies, created by Murano artists one at the time, each unique, each perfect little bubble of light trapped in glass. I wonder if these artists of time passed could imagine their necklaces, or necklaces just like theirs, surviving centuries and ending up around lovely ladies’ necks by the pool in Miami?
